The Curlew’s Nest – An Eco-Friendly Off-Grid Cabin with a Window to the Wild

Client: F&S

While its pared-back architectural form may seem simple at first glance, The Curlew’s Nest is a carefully crafted celebration of slow living and sustainable design. At its heart is a huge panoramic picture window, designed to immerse you in the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Whether you're reading a book or sipping your morning coffee, it’s a front-row seat to incredible wildlife sightings — deer, birds of prey, and of course, the curlews themselves.

Built with environmental care in mind, this off-grid cabin features pine cladding treated with eco-conscious Osmo oil, enhancing the natural grain while allowing the timber to breathe. The interior flooring is laid in solid oak, lending a grounded warmth underfoot. Tucked into the living space is a charming Hobbit stove, perfect for heating the space on chilly Highland evenings.

Adding a touch of whimsy and ingenuity, the hand pump tap brings rustic fun to the kitchen, paired with a bespoke antique copper and brass sink handmade by our team. A drop-leaf live-edge elm table, crafted from a tree that fell naturally in the customer's woodland, adds heritage and heart to the dining space.

The Curlew’s Nest is more than just a cabin — it’s a peaceful retreat that combines eco-luxury with rustic craftsmanship. It’s a space where nature is invited in, stories are embedded into every grain of wood, and every design choice supports a lighter footprint on the land.
