What Does "Coorie" Mean?

In the Highlands of Scotland, where rugged beauty meets heartfelt craftsmanship, we had the pleasure of creating a truly special shepherd's hut: The Coorie. Named after the warm Scottish word meaning "to snuggle, nestle, or find comfort," this hut perfectly embodies the essence of the coorie lifestyle — simple living, close connection, and warmth.

This bespoke hut was commissioned by a loving family for their elderly mother, a retired doctor. Their home wasn’t quite large enough to accommodate her full-time, yet they wanted to offer her a space that was both independent and deeply connected to the rhythms of family life. The Coorie became the perfect solution: a warm, safe sanctuary just a few steps away from loved ones.

Designing a Hut for Independence and Warmth

Built with thoughtful intention and heartfelt design, the hut features an end-door layout and corner window that fills the space with natural light and lovely views of the garden. Inside, luxurious velvet Roman blinds add softness and style, while the corner wood-burning stove ensures it stays cosy even in the chilliest Highland weather.

The layout includes everything needed for independent living without compromising on charm or practicality. A compact kitchen with a plate rack provides the essentials for everyday meals. A composting toilet is tucked neatly into a spacious shower room. Thoughtfully placed storage includes a wardrobe with shelving, and a wee wall-mounted TV offers the comfort of quiet evenings in.
